The cost of drugs and alcohol at work

A report by Alcohol Concern in May 2000 estimated that hard drinking costs UK plc around 3.3 billion each year. The NHS spends around 200 million treating drink-related illness whilst alcohol-related road traffic accidents cost 189 million and alcohol-related crime costs 68 million.

Research published by the CIPD in September 1999 puts the cost of alcohol abuse in the workplace in the UK at around 2 billion each year. Drug abuse accounts for an estimated 800 million, whilst alcohol and drugs combined account for an estimated 14 million lost working days.

A variety of causes are cited, including pressure by the employer to get drunk with clients, especially at hospitality events.

One cause of alcohol and substance abuse that is often overlooked is employees becoming dependent on alcohol, and sometimes drugs, due to the prolonged negative stress caused by bullying and harassment, often backed up by threat, coercion, long working hours and job insecurity. Dependence can range from tannin and caffeine in tea and coffee, nicotine from smoking, through alcohol abuse, drug abuse and substance abuse to beta-blockers and antidepressants such as Prozac (fluoxetine).
